How To Heal Gluten Intolerance
How to Heal Gluten Intolerance
If you have any of the following 12 symptoms, you MAY be intolerant to gluten
2. Diarrhea, Constipation, Odourous Gas
3. Abdominal Pain
5. Brain Fog
6. Fatigue / Sleepy
7. Anxiety, Depression
8. Skin Problems
10. Autoimmune Disorders
11. Joint & Muscle Pain
12. Tingling Hands, Feet, Numb arms or legs
A simple way to test your tolerance to gluten is to eliminate it from your diet for just 5 days. Scan the list
of symptoms above (or complete our quiz) and tune in to your current reality. On a scale of 1-10, how
intense are your symptoms this week?
If you’ve already identified gluten as a demon and avoid it like the plague, stay with me. I’m not actually
into elimination as an end result. In this article, we’ll explore some of the likely reasons that gluten is
running amok in 2020, where in previous decades it was thought to be not only benign but highly
Then, I’ll give you a mud map of the road to healing your gut. You may even be able to enjoy gluten
again. After 8 years of intolerance, I can now eat good quality sourdough to my hearts content. A number
of my clients are also enjoying the culture of decadent dining that they always loved but had been limited
from in recent years.
What is Gluten?
Gluten is a protein that is found primarily in wheat, though it is also present in other grains. It is the
“Glue” that holds foods like pizza together, and makes the dough stretchy. Unfortunately, in modern
times, immune systems have begun reacting to gluten and causing an inflammatory response in the gut.
The end result is that your intestines become permeable and undigested food can pass into the blood.
Imagine a hose that is cracked in many places and slowly leaks. This is how gluten intolerance can lead to
some of the symptoms listed above.
So, if you’re with me and ready for the Gluten Challenge, you’ll want to avoid the following foods for 5
1. Wheat – bread, pasta, pizza, noodles, most processed food, cakes etc
2. Barley – including beer 🙁
4. Oats – and most commercial cereals or granola
5. Spelt, Kamut, Emmer, Einkorn, Durum
If you’re not sure, just google it! After 5 days, take note of your symptoms again. Are you feeling clearer,
calmer and with more energy without gluten? If so, you may choose to avoid it. For me, I see problems as
a project, and look for solutions. Read on and I’ll explain what I’ve discovered.
Why The G/F Epidemic?
Have you wondered why you can’t eat gluten anymore? When you were a kid, it was a staple. It can be
disheartening to be denied your favourite foods, believe me, I know! If you’ve been gluten free for a
while, you’ve probably come up with a working theory about the gluten-free epidemic. Here are 3 leading
1. Wheat has been hybridised over the last 50 years to increase yield per acre. As a result, the once
glorious 2m wheat stalks are now dwarfs, capped below 1m. While this is a cheaper way to
produce a staple grain, we might be paying the cost with our health. While this breeding process is
not technically classified as Genetic Modification (GMO), the mutation of the gluten and other
proteins renders wheat “unrecognisable” to the human body. The immune system marks this
gluten mutant as a threat and sparks an inflammatory response.
2. Commercial grain crops are heavily sprayed with glyphosate, a herbicide, known carcinogen that
is likely to damage your liver, kidneys and gut biome. While you may find organic wheat or
ancient grains such as kamut easier to digest, it’s highly likely that the damage to the gut biome
has occurred and we need to fix this first.
3. While the above two theories seem to stand up, we are seeing in our practice that the presence of
helminthic worms can reverse gluten intolerance and complete the gut biome. They are the
missing species in the ecosystem. When helminths are present, the immune system is upgraded.
Seasonal allergies disappear, personality shifts can occur in autism, ADD/ADHD, asthma may
resolve and auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis hyperthyroidism and diabetes may
Can we Reverse Gluten Intolerance?
The short answer is – YES! It is possible…
I’ve met a yoga teacher who healed her gluten intolerance with Chi Nei Tsang (abdominal massage), yin
yoga and meditation (nervous system regulation). Another colleague in Nutritional credits a strong herbal
formula for her turnaround. But the most interesting case that I’ve come across is a woman who went to
India, got a bug and suddenly COULD eat gluten again! It seems that whatever she picked up facilitated
the immune regulation that she needed to normalise her gut biome.
And that’s where helminth worms come in.
If you google helminths, you will likely find articles on how to rid them from your body. You see, in
developing countries, people suffer malnutrition due to intestinal worms.
As we shifted toward a more hygienic society in the west, we began to remove the worms from our gut
intentionally with pharmaceutical medicine. Antibiotics will also wipe out helminths. And we simply
don’t spend much time in the bush and around animals without wearing shoes.
Our cleanliness is our detriment. In the west, our immune system suffers from a deficiency of worms. It
seems that our immune systems have co-evolved with helminths and thrive best when they are present
(but not overpopulating) in the gut biome.
So in my case, my gluten intolerance was reversed with only two doses of helminths – though I continue
the treatment fortnightly for the best results.
A parallel from nature – interesting but I may not include it in this article and didn’t finish the
In Yellowstone National Park in America, it’s the presence of wolves in that eco-system that ensures that
life thrives. In the 1920’s, government policy allowed for the culling of wolves in Yellowstone. +
How to repair the gut biome
Healing your gut doesn’t have to be hard. By simply avoiding the foods that you’ve identified as
inflammatory, you’re putting a stop to the damage and allowing the body to repair itself. The following 8
foods are healing for the gut.
1. Bone Broth
8. Apple Cider Vinegar
It’s also important to look at lifestyle factors and stress reduction, as a large part of the nervous system is
in the gut and feedbacks with the brain. You can
1. Explore breathing techniques, meditation, yoga
2. Develop a sleep ritual (an extensive program will soon be available with Sovereign Medicine)
3. Increase your consumption of fermented foods (sauerkraut, quality natural yoghurt, miso)
4. Take prebiotics (fiber) and probiotics daily (including soil based probiotics
5. Find a Chi Nei Tsang practitioner for abdominal massage
6. Commence Helminths Therapy
How to work with worms
Now, it’s not as simple as eating worms from the garden or walking around barefoot. While the latter is
highly encouraged, its difficult to contract helminths through the skin.
There is a very effective treatment with hookworm, though the process is intense.
The culture is injected into the skin and the hookworm enters the blood. It crawls into your lungs, you
cough and swallow the sputum. Eventually, hookworm proliferate in your gut, though they become
parasitic. These helminths bore through your gut lumen and find their way into your liver. We don’t want
that. It’s gross.
The HDC helminths that we work with at Sovereign Medicine are much more polite. Made professionally
in an Australian lab, HDC helminths are freshly harvested weekly and transported in a saline solution.
They are invisible, as they are larvae at this stage. They are express posted to your door and when they
arrive, you simply mix them with coconut oil and drink the solution.
You may become aware of a new sentient life force in your body, and experience butterflies in your
stomach during the first 48 hours. Some diarrhoea may occur initially, as the worms go to work removing
waste and upgrading the gut biome.
After a few days, it’s common to be immersed by a sense of calm, groundedness and focus.
Suddenly, you may feel well – happy for no reason, as your nervous system relaxes and your adrenals
switch to a restful state.
Putting it all together
While helminths can make healing really very easy, the best results come when you are supported to
approach healing from all aspects.
That’s why I offer helminths in my Gut Healing Program – a 3 month journey that follows seasonal
themes of clearing, building, expanding and flourishing. I bring together Ayurvedic cleansing techniques,
breathwork, pre & probiotic preparation, supplementation and there is also space for deep emotional
